Live from Havana, Cuba
YouTube Playlist: Jazz Fundamentals

Since starting the MichMusic Now video series in April 2018, many questions have come in from different sources: YouTube, the MichMusic.com contact page, general email, and the MichMusic Network Facebook group. Thought it would be fun to grab a few of these questions and address them in a place everyone could see.

Also thought it would be fun to do it in Havana! 🙂

Here are some of the questions addressed in the video:

  • PIANO: As a solo pianist playing gigs, how do I segue smoothly between one song and the next, in a new key?
  • THEORY: If a song appears to be in the key of F but it starts on a Bb major chord, does this mean the song is really in the key of Bb major?
  • ARRANGING: How do you arrange for voices in jazz vocals? Is writing for horns the same as writing for vocals?
  • SCATTING: Why am I having a disconnect between 1. learning licks and recorded solos and 2. being able to access those ideas in my own scatting?
  • PIANO: How do I create a rubato piano intro? (This one is easy: see the MichMusic Now Video, “Creating a Rubato Piano Intro.”)
  • PIANO: How to reharmonizes or otherwise alter a song to make the repetition more interesting?
  • PIANO/VOCAL TOGETHER: What can I do everyday to practice accompanying myself while singing?
