JAZZ CHOIR WARMUPS WITH SCATABILITY:
PDF DOWNLOAD

For an energizing warmup with your class or vocal jazz group, consider group scat singing “games.” There is a lot that can be done in the realm of group activities that energize and educate. And it’s easier to facilitate than you might think.

Here are some of the positive outcomes from doing repeated scatting warmups with your group:

= better awareness of inner rhythm and developing a good feel

= familiarity with the language of jazz, on all levels including melodic and harmonic

= ear absorption of jazz color and timbral qualities correct for an authentic jazz sound

= increased interest and alertness (energizing!)

= familiarity with the dissonances and patterns of typical of jazz chord progressions so common in jazz standards

= the rare chance for students to be creative and expressive in their own unique way (at school, in an otherwise structured environment)

= fun, fun, fun – especially after students get some experience under their belt

In this video you’ll learn about specific ways to facilitate scat singing with your choir or class a way that feels ‘safe’ to those who are not yet experienced in singing jazz and doing vocal improvisation. You’ll see actual examples of activities with singers from different areas of the world, each having a different level of experience with improvisation!
